Schools and Guns
They don't mix. Guns don't mix well with anything really, except for those who appreciate, understand and respect the machinery. With that being said, a gun is a gun, is a gun and it doesn't matter if it's loaded, unloaded, nerf, or air soft. It's still a gun.
Do I own guns? Yes. I own a lot of them, and they are 100% always locked up in the safe. The only people able to access them, are R and myself. We spent a pretty penny on specific gun safes that will protect our family and keep them put away responsibly.
With that being said, lets jump to the drama.
Last Tuesday was normal, get up go to work, kids go to school blah, blah blah. In other words, same shit different day. Normal. After work, and after school it was the same thing. Come home, eat dinner, kids do their homework. Normal. I don't really get on Facebook much anymore, but after the house settled down, I browsed and saw a post made by my kids' school at 4:30 pm.
In short, the note stated there was a situation in the school. A student reported another student for bringing a gun to school in his backpack, and it was an airsoft gun. Everyone was safe and the situation was handled.
Here's the long version of what I discovered after going through the comments.
It was a boy, in 5th grade who was apparently making threats. Come to find out after connecting with a woman who stated it was in her daughters' class; this happened in my son's class! The situation happened at 9:30 AM, and no parent was notified. The only was anyone was informed was via a Facebook post. There were no mass emails, or text notifications in regard to this situation. So, if you think about the parents who don't have social media accounts, they probably haven't found out or found out later via word of mouth.
Jesus, the more I write about this, I feel my head throbbing and my heart racing.
It's crazy to think about because over the weekend, a mass text went out regarding the bus routes and roads being closed. It was addressed the following business day as a 'mistake,' but every parent who has a child that rides the buses got it. However, a gun (regardless of what type it was) was found in a child's backpack and it was told about after school hours and via a Facebook post.
So, I spoke with several other parents and asked how they'd feel in different positions:
'What would you do if it were your child who brought the gun?'
'What would you do if it were your child who saw the gun and reported it?'
'What would you do if you found out it was a child in your child's class?'
'What would you do if you found out about it after school hours when it happened in the morning?'
I was given the same response from everyone I asked.
'Livid. Livid. Livid. Livid and the board would hear from me.'
So, there you have it, I'm trying not to lose my shit, and mentally figure out how to handle this situation without looking like a Karen on crack. Tell me though, if you're a parent, how would you feel or handle this?
